This white natural drawing chalk from Belgium is a carbonate rock composed of the mineral calcite, a naturally occurring calcium carbonate. Chalk is a variety of limestone that was produced geologically from the fossilisation of marine organisms. As a natural product, white chalk needs only be cut to a suitable shape and size to be usable. The white chalk from Belgium undergoes a two-step cutting process to get its typical elongated rectangular shape. Used as a drawing material, this white chalk is softer and more opaque than conventional school chalk made from plaster. In drawings, natural white chalk is often used for heightening. In powder, it works extraordinarily well as a white filler for primers and wall paints. Together with black chalk, yellow and red ochres, white chalk is one of the four colors that predominated in Stone Age cultures.
